FluMist®: The Needle-Free Flu Vaccine Changing Childhood Immunisation in WA

What is FluMist?

FluMist® is a needle-free influenza vaccine delivered as a gentle nasal spray rather than an injection. It contains a live attenuated (weakened) influenza virus, designed to stimulate immunity without causing illness.

Unlike traditional flu shots, FluMist® is sprayed into the nostrils, making it particularly appealing for children who are anxious about needles. It has been used safely for many years overseas and is now available in Australia for the first time in the 2026 flu season.

How does FluMist® work?

FluMist works by mimicking a natural infection in the nasal passages:

  • The weakened virus stimulates the immune system locally in the nose
  • This triggers production of antibodies against influenza
  • Protection develops without causing full-blown illness

Because it is administered intranasally, it can provide strong mucosal immunity, which may help reduce transmission in the community – particularly important in children, who are major spreaders of influenza.

Key benefits for patients

✔ Needle-free – ideal for needle-phobic children
✔ Quick and painless – no injection discomfort
✔ Convenient – simple administration in pharmacy or clinic
✔ Supports uptake – improves vaccination rates in children

Studies and real-world use suggest parents often prefer nasal vaccines, which may lead to higher overall immunisation coverage.

WA Government eligibility (FREE Influenza vaccination program)

Western Australia has introduced one of the most comprehensive FluMist programs in Australia.

Free FluMist®program (WA State-funded)

  • Age group: Children 2 to 17 years (inclusive)
  • Cost: FREE
  • Availability: Typically mid-April to 31st July 2026
  • Where: At Belmont City Community Pharmacy
  • Recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR)

This makes WA the only state offering such a broad free FluMist® program for children.

Who can receive FluMist®?

FluMist is approved in Australia for:

  • Children and adolescents aged 2–17 years

However, free access in WA applies only to:

  • Children aged 2–17 years

May NOT be suitable for:

  • Immunocompromised patients
  • Children with certain chronic conditions
  • Those on specific medications

Please check with the Pharmacist if any of the above conditions may apply.

Safety and side effects

FluMist is generally well tolerated. Common mild effects may include:

  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Mild fever
  • Sore throat

These are usually short-lived and resolve without treatment.

Why FluMist® matters

Influenza remains a significant cause of illness in children, and at the present time, vaccination rates have historically been low.

By removing the barrier of needles, FluMist is expected to:

  • Increase vaccination rates
  • Reduce community transmission
  • Decrease GP visits and hospitalisations

FluMist is more than just a new product—it’s a shift in how we deliver vaccinations, particularly in children.
